Hmm..I’ll bet I have your attention now. After all, everyone wants to know the secrets that lead to publication. The thing is, there is no secret. Instead, here are three tips to help you go from “wannabe” to “published” writer. Follow them and it won’t be long before you see your work, and your name, in print.
1. Read! Read! Read! Go to the library or bookstore and read about becoming a writer. Read how other writers started their writing careers and what helped them become successful. Also, read the kinds of books you want to write. Want to write mysteries? Read mysteries. Want to write a children’s’ book? Read children’s books.
2. Practice! Practice! Practice! Write something every day. If you want to play tennis well, you must play tennis ever day. The same is true for writing. You should write every day, even if it’s only for 15 minutes or so.
3. Study! Study! Study…the markets, that is. You’ll have a better chance of selling your work if you find out what publishers want. Study the magazines and other publications that you want to write for. Make note of the titles and types of articles in each. Check a current market guide to get writers’ guidelines for these publications. Follow these guidelines “to the letter” with each submission.
Okay. That’s it.
If you have a writing tip you’d like to share, please post it here or email it to me.
Happy writing!
