Center for the Book

by Lisa Harkrader

Lately it seems that all I’ve been talking about to other writers and on my personal blog is the Kansas Center for the Book (KCFB). No, I’m not a paid spokesperson for KCFB. I’m just a very happy member. While the mission of the organization is not to promote authors, per se, joining KCFB has turned out to be one of the best things I’ve done to promote my middle-grade novel, Airball: My Life in Briefs.

KCFB is an affiliate of the Library of Congress’s Center for the Book, which “was established in 1977 to use the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress to promote books, reading, libraries, and literacy.” The national center has state affiliate centers in all fifty states plus the District of Columbia. Thanks in large part to our tireless director, Roy Bird (who is also a writer), the Kansas affiliate actively promotes Kansas books and authors to libraries and bookstores in the state, bringing authors, librarians, booksellers, and readers together in many different venues. In the past few months I’ve been invited to an author dinner at the state library conference, a book fair at a regional library conference, and the Kansas Book Festival, which will take place in Wichita in September. At every KCFB event I meet readers and book professionals who would otherwise not have heard of my book.

I can’t guarantee that every state affiliate is as active and writer-friendly as our affiliate here in Kansas, but if you’re trying to promote your book in your own region, you owe it to yourself to check out your state’s Center for the Book.

I’m so glad you posted about this! I just *knew* our state had to have some group with this type of presence!
