Where Oh Where Has My Water Department Gone?

Every three months, the Town of Greenburgh sends me a water bill.

Water costs $2.39/1000 gallons where I live. On average, my water bill runs $19.00, plus or minus a few cents.

This bill was $21.51.

What can I say? I’m squeaky clean.

The reason I mention my water bill is I decided to save .37 cents postage and pay it in person.

Greenburgh Water Department is located across the street from the shopping center on Route 100, the one with the A&P, the Dunkin’ Donuts, the CVS.

It is around the corner from where I live.

Paying a water bill, in person, seemed like a no-brainer.

Besides, there are days I make any excuse to get out of the house and not write. This was one of those days.

But…and here’s the curious part. When I got to the Greenburgh Water Department, I couldn’t figure out where, or how, to pay my bill.

In 9 years, I must have driven past that red brick building 9,000 times and never once noticed the sign’s not real. It’s almost as if one needs a secret password to pay a water bill in my town.

The sign says,

“PAY WATER BILLS IN OFFICE.”

Okay. Sounds easy, you say.

Hang a left.

Park the Corolla.

Head to “The Office,” the building marked,

“WATER DEPARTMENT OFFICE.”

Walk to the right.

Nope.

No access there.

Walk to the left.

Uh-uh.

Same thing. No access there.

The place is gated and locked like a prison.

I checked my calendar. I happen to carry one of those things around with me, along with a digital camera, especially for times like this.

Nope.

It’s not Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Day.

So what gives?

And what’s with those two signs?

I have no idea.

All I know is in my town, you can’t pay your water bill where it says you can pay your water bill. And, you can’t have a drink.

Go figure.

    Linda,

Isn’t it weird that they can sure find YOU if you don’t pay the bill but they are nowhere to be found.

    Thanks for a fun read.
