“Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.”
–Proverb 3:17
“…all her paths are peace.”
I’ve always marveled at this passage extolling the virtues of wisdom.
Paths of peace - how can that be? My life, it seems, is in a constant state of turmoil, bounding between varying levels of uncertainty and distress. Did I really need to say that, to write that, to think it? What was I thinking, in the first place? Will I never learn?
I tend to fret and worry, and I don’t need much in the way of raw material. I can weave a decent shawl of distress from a few meager strands of life’s uncertainty. A query rejection here, a surprise there, an unkind word. Before long, I’ve brought all my creative skills to bear and developed a full storyline of despair. My mind becomes my private screening room, constantly projecting my life in bleak shades of gray.
There are, thankfully, times at which I find a sense of peace in life. It’s often when I’m walking, the breeze wrapping itself about me, the colors and sounds of nature inviting me to step into a different realm. The things I’ve been most worried about suddenly seem the most inconsequential.
In those times of quiet I see, if only for a few moments, a different path of life. It’s filled with hope and joy, with family and friends, passion and pursuit, with peace…
I relish the times I find this quiet place in my life, and I work at finding it more often. I work. If quietness comes naturally to you, you are truly blessed. If not, then get to work - there are paths of peace to explore…
Enjoy the journey.
