479608_shaking_handsIf you’re a freelance writer, graphics designer, or other small business professional, you probably don’t have a lot of money to spend on advertising, marketing, or promoting your business so you need to stretch every dollar.

But how DO you stretch your small budget as far as possible?

Well, one way is to barter your products and services with other small business owners whose businesses are somewhat different from yours.

Here’s an example. As a writing instructor and coach, I often write e-books or short e-courses that I sell online. These products need professional covers designed and produced by a graphics designer, which is NOT my line of work. So I barter with a graphics designer for this type of product. She provides me with a cover design for my e-book and I may write a press release, promotional copy for her company brochure, or do some other type of writing for her. Sounds easy, right?

Actually, bartering has been around for centuries. It’s nothing more than trading, so just think of early settlers trading blankets and other goods with Native Americans for furs and food and you’ve got the concept of bartering. A word of warning, though - I don’t recommend going to other small business owners and offering to barter for their products and services instead of expecting to pay for these items. Company owners may be put off by this. Instead, I suggest you look for groups of professionals who make it known they are open to bartering for business. If you can’t find any groups, then start one yourself and solicit members who wish to trade products and services with each other.

If you start your own bartering group, it may take members a while to figure out a fair and even exchange of products and services. But, once they do, everyone in the group should benefit from bartering to build their businesses.
