from Suzanne Lieurance, The Working Writer’s Coach and founder of Build Your Business Write

PortfolioIf you’re a small business owner or a freelancer just starting out, bartering is a great way to stretch your budget. You simply trade your own products and services for other types of services that you need. But, bartering to save money is not the only reason to barter. Here’s another great reason for any small business owner or freelance professional (whether or not they are just starting out) to barter for business.

Bartering for business is a wonderful way to build your professional portfolio. This is especially true for professionals who have been in business for a while, yet they are wanting to branch out and offer some new products and services.

Let’s say, for example, that I’m a writer, yet I have never written press releases for pay. If someone wishes to see sample press releases in my portfolio, I don’t have any examples to show. This might make it difficult to get my first press release client. If I offer to write a press release for another business professional in exchange for something he or she has to offer, chances are, this person will take me up on my offer as long as:

1) I know how to write an effective press release,

2) I can be expected to do a good job, and

3) I am willing to barter for some service or product that is also a new offering for the person I am planning to barter with.

If you’d like to save money AND build your portfolio, bartering is a great way to do both. So why not start bartering for business today?
